Setting up Vitamin D Video with a USB Webcam
See a short video tutorial of this topic here.
1. Install Vitamin D Video
- Double-click the icon of the installer that you downloaded from the Vitamin D website, and follow the on-screen directions.

2. Open the Vitamin D Video application
- The first time you start the Vitamin D Video application, you begin with the free Starter Edition.
- If you have not purchased the Basic or Pro Edition, click User Starter Edition to continue. You can purchase an upgrade by clicking here.

- If you click to Activate license..., you will see a screen asking you to locate the license file that was sent to you when you purchased the application.
- If you did not receive a license file, check your spam filter for a message from Vitamin D.
- IMPORTANT: If you are using Gmail and Internet Explorer, the file may be downloaded as a compressed .zip file. If so, right-click on the zip file and select the "Extract All" option.
- If you cannot find your license file, search your computer for a file that ends with the ".lic" file type.
- If you have a problem with your license file or need to have another license file sent to you, please contact support@vitamindinc.com.
3. Find the camera connected to your computer
The first time you open Vitamin D Video, a Camera Setup Assistant opens to step you through installing a camera (it can also be accessed from Tools > Add Camera...).
- In the Camera type drop-down list, select USB, built-in, or other webcam

- If your camera is detected, its name will appear in the Camera drop-down list, for example, "Built-in iSight."
If your camera does not appear in the drop-down list click here for troubleshooting tips
If your camera did not appear, try the following steps:
- Make sure your webcam is plugged into the computer, into your USB port. (Note that the cable may appear to fit into other ports!) Try disconnecting and reconnecting it.
- Make sure you have installed any drivers that may be required, and that your webcam is compatible with your computer.
- If you are using a USB hub, try plugging the webcam directly into the computer. Some hubs, particularly unpowered ones, cannot support more than one or two attached devices.
- Try opening another application that uses your camera to make sure that it is working properly. If you have an external webcam (one that you plug into the computer rather than one that is built in), it probably came with a disk containing software that uses the webcam. If not, there are freeware applications on the Internet that can be downloaded.
Mac owners can try iChat, which comes installed in most Macs. (Note that you will be asked to log into a Jabber account, but you can ignore this and test the video.)
- If you cannot get your webcam to work using another application, you can try consulting the documentation or support website of your camera's manufacturer, such as Logitech's webcam support page or Apple's iSight support page.
- If you can get your webcam to work but it does not show up in the Vitamin D Video camera setup wizard, there are not any common known causes for this symptom. It may be the result of an intermittent or temporary problem that can be resolved by restarting Vitamin D Video or rebooting your computer.
- (This feature is only available in the Basic and Pro editions.) On the same screen, select the resolution you will use to save your video. Make sure that your camera supports the selected resolution (specifically, not all cameras support the higher resolutions such as 1024 x 768 or 1280 x 1024). Note also that higher resolution settings can increase processing and disk space requirements considerably. For resolutions higher than VGA, you may find it necessary to increase the amount of disk space allocated to saving video, which is described in the section Managing Your Video.

4. Test your camera connection
- The set up assistant now attempts to access your camera on the network using the user name and password you entered. This may take a few seconds, or it may take up to 30 seconds or more. The blue box in the middle of the screen should change from saying "Connecting..." to displaying an image of your camera's view.

If no video image appears in the blue box, click here for troubleshooting tips
If instead of an image, the text"Could not connect" is displayed, Vitamin D Video could not access your camera. If that happens:
- The most likely explanation is that the camera is being used by another application that is running. See if another application like a video chat program is running, and if so quit it.
- In some specific cases there may be conflicts with other USB devices (for example, on certain Macintosh models, a Macally webcam and an iSight cannot be connected at the same time).
- Some applications may for some reason end up in a state where the application is not running, but they still have control of the camera. If that is the case you may need to reboot your computer. Make sure another webcam application is not starting automatically. Check to make sure there is not an icon representing a running webcam application in your system tray (for Windows) or on the top right of your menu bar (for Mac OS). To return to this screen, open Vitamin D Video again, and select Tools > Add Camera to launch the setup assistant.
- Verify if you have the latest drivers for your webcam:
- Download the latest USB camera driver the camera manufacturer's website.
- Uninstall the current driver.
- Unplug the camera from USB (important).
- Reinstall the latest driver that you downloaded.
- Plug the camera in again.
- Alternatively, in some cases the default Windows drivers may work in cases where the manufacturer's driver does not:
- Uninstall the current driver.
- Unplug the camera from USB (important).
- Plug the camera in again
- If you haven't already, you can try another application to make sure your webcam is working.
5. Create a name for your camera location
- Enter a Camera location name, which is used in various places by Vitamin D Video. For example, when looking for video clips, it might be easier to choose between "Front yard" and "Backyard" than it would to choose between "Camera 1" and "Camera 2."
- To edit a camera location name after quitting the setup assistant, select Tools > Edit Camera Location.

6. Choose to finish or add another camera
